There are so many mattress choices. How do I know which is right for me?
The best way to choose a mattress is to try it out. Lie down on different mattresses and see which ones seem to fit you best. All of our mattresses are built with quality materials, so they will last 10 years or more. (All of our residential mattresses are warranted for 15 years.) With us, durability is never an issue–that’s helpful because all you need to do is decide which feels most comfortable.
How long does a mattress last?
Most high-quality mattresses last about 7-10 years, but this can vary depending on the type and usage. For a mattress to live its full life, it must be supported by a good foundation (such as sturdy box springs), and the center of the bed must be supported from beneath by a leg or a support reaching the floor. Also, we strongly recommend that you purchase a mattress protector sheet to keep contaminants out of the foam and extend the life of the mattress. We offer a 10-year warranty on all our mattresses, even though current industry trends are moving to a 5-year sales cycle–meaning that some companies aren’t building mattresses as well as they used to.
I’ve never heard of Heartland Mattress. Does that mean your mattresses are lower quality?
We’ve been making mattresses since 2009 and use top-tier components in all our mattresses. Each is made by hand in our workshop in northern Indiana, which is a center of some of the best Old-World craftsmanship. You may not have heard of us, but those who know us have come to trust us.
Can you help me think about firmness levels?
What position do you usually sleep in? Your primary sleeping position (side, back, stomach) will influence the firmness and type of mattress you need. Side sleepers generally prefer softer mattresses for better pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers often benefit from firmer options to maintain spinal alignment.
What do you recommend to support a mattress?
What are you currently using? Not having a good box spring and fully supportive frame will affect the comfort and longevity of your mattress. If you don’t currently have good support, you should plan on adding it to your mattress purchase.
Do you recommend a mattress protector?
A mattress protector affects the comfort and longevity of a mattress. Using a mattress without a protector can accentuate health issues like allergies and asthma. These issues come from the chemicals and particles left by body fluids, dead skin, dust, and other things that can get into an unprotected mattress.
Do people tend to overlook anything when looking for a mattress?
One thing we recommend is to pay attention to how well the edge of the mattress is built. Good edge support enhances durability and maximizes usable sleep surface area. If you’ve not paid attention to the edge of a mattress before, it’s something to consider. You’ll feel the difference when you sit on the edge of the bed.
Do I need to know about various kinds of foam and springs? Since they are inside the mattress, I can’t see them, and they seem complicated.
Mattresses are made of diverse materials. Each has unique properties affecting comfort, support, and durability. For example, memory foam conforms to your body and retains heat, while innerspring mattresses offer more bounce and breathability. Hot sleepers should avoid memory foam. If you aren’t sure about a material, always make sure to ask your retailer.
Can you explain firmness levels?
There is no universal standard for rating the firmness of a mattress. What one brand labels as “medium” can feel different from another brand. We have given firmness numbers as a general guide, but test each mattress yourself.
Do you sell mattresses for adjustable beds?
Yes, a number of our mattresses work with adjustable bed frames. Those that work with adjustable beds are noted on the product pages.
